Stepping onto Chinatown

Look at these shophouses! These were specially designated for the Chinese community in the 1828 Town Plan, and were once filled with immigrants that came from China. You can now catch a glimpse of their living space in Chinatown Heritage Centre along Pangoda Street.

As I embarked on my journey in rediscovering Chinatown, I was filled with different insights. These are a few shops lining up the streets, and they always have surprises installed for you, from the most practical items, i.e. a cap, a hand-held fan for you to fight the sun with, they even have handicraft items. I always thought that Chinatown is a shopping destination for the older generation, it was an eye-opener for me to see that Chinatown has modernized and selling apparels that appeals to the young ones. Yeah, you will definitely not regret exploring Chinatown, and that's provided if you have the time and enough leg muscles to conquer the shopping aka cultural village! In addition to that, the prices are very reasonable and there's a wide variety to choose from! And of course, even if you are tired from all the walk, there are local food centers, pubs and cafe whereby you can take a breather and enjoy watching the walks of life before your eyes!

Besides fashion, I found out that the tourists hot spots are the cultural shops that sells antiques, mini-Buddha statues, or mostly sourvinier shops. Indeed, they are very popular sites, be very impressed when you walked into the shop and see what is presented before your eyes! (Sorry, no photography inside the shop. Boo boo!) Oh, if you think they only sell BIG items, you are wrong. They are also selling antique mirrors, those hand-held ones, delicated gift-cases and ancient wooden boxes for safekeeping of your accessories.

Oh, my poor digicam is unable to take the full body of the church and it is surrounded by tall trees, you have to be there to see it for yourself! It is definitely a majestic church, with beautiful courtyard and garden. My photos could not give justice to it's beauty!

Even the exit looks so nice! I might take more photos again, so behold! It is still an active church, means you can still go there to attend their services, in several languages which you can choose from. If you would like to join their volunteer work in helping in church or sharing your love with the poor, you can always contact them!

Visit them! It's next to City Hall train Station, you can always ask our friendly control officer if you are unsure of the direction.

Singapore Art Museum is one of the first art museums with international standard museum facilities and programmes in Southeast Asia. The Museum houses the national art collection of Singapore and has the largest collection in 20th-century Southeast Asian art by a public institution internationally.

The Museum has brought in several international shows including Leonardo da Vinci :Scientist-Inventor-Artist, German Art :1960s to 1970s, The Origins of Modern Art in France, and Monet to Moore: Millennium Gift of The Sara Lee Corporation. These provide a context and forum for art development and practices of Southeast Asia.

Since its opening, the Museum's permanent collection has grown from under 2,000 art works to over 7,000 making it the largest collection of 20th-century Southeast Asian art in the region.

Community outreach continues to be an important area of the Museum's function. The Museum aims to promote awareness and appreciation of art within the local and regional context and in so doing, it hopes to encourage the growth of an active and stimulating cultural environment in Singapore.

Visitors to the SAM can expect to find an interactive, living centre for art, with advanced museum facilities. Its 10,000-square metre floor space includes 14 full climate-controlled galleries, a reference library, an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall, a museum shop, courtyards and a café, all together ensure a quality experience for visitors. Since its opening, the Museum has been stimulating the cultural environment of Singapore and continues to do so with breathtaking shows and exciting programmes.

Located at the restored 19th-century old St Joseph's Institution (SJI) building on Bras Basah Road, SAM is easily accessible by public transport. You can hop on an MRT where SAM is approximately a 10-minute walk from Dhoby Ghaut / City Hall MRT stations.
